This is a time of global crisis. We are living through a fast-moving, large-scale disaster that is having extraordinary public health and economic consequences. As we begin a new year, and as vaccines become increasingly available across our state, glimmers of hope are emerging. But the challenges remain daunting, especially for those disproportionately hurt by the pandemic and its far-reaching effects.
During these unprecedented times, PPIC’s work has never felt more relevant or necessary. At the start of 2021, we are focused on what lies ahead. How will our economy respond in the long term? How can the state improve opportunities for those hardest hit by this crisis? What can we observe, measure, and propose that will help California to rebuild itself efficiently, effectively, and equitably? Here is what we’re doing:
- We’re providing timely facts and objective information. The pandemic and related recession have hit California hard. Our ongoing blog series on COVID-19 is exploring its multiple effects, from struggling small businesses to families dealing with food scarcity.
- We’re focusing on the people facing the greatest challenges. PPIC experts are examining the barriers to opportunity across our state and analyzing longstanding racial and ethnic disparities in key policy areas, from education to criminal justice.
- We’re offering numerous opportunities to learn and engage. Our virtual events are convening diverse stakeholders, encouraging constructive discussion about difficult issues, and sharing that dialogue with a broad audience.
For more than 25 years, PPIC has worked hard to inform and improve public policy in California. 2020 may have been one of our most challenging years yet, but PPIC has adapted successfully to meet that challenge.
At the same time, we grieve the loss of so many across our state, our nation, and our world. As we look forward to 2021, I want to extend my deepest sympathies and also share my hopes for a better future.
I invite you to stay up to date with our research and activities—including publications, events, and videos—by signing up for our monthly e-bulletin and subscribing to our blog.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions, especially during this unprecedented time.
